Caregiving Youth

Who is a Caregiving Youth?

Caregiving youth are typically 8 to 18 years of age and provide care for a sibling, parent, grandparent or other family member. Young adult caregivers are age 18-25 and provide a similar level of care to a family member. Common care situations may include:

  • Family member is retired military / veteran.
  • Family member has a disability.
  • Family member has a chronic physical or mental illness.
  • Family member has a drug / alcohol addiction.
  • Family member is aging and unable to care for themselves.
  • Younger siblings in the home.
  • Siblings in the home have special needs.

Caregiving youth have needs that often vary from the needs of adult caregivers. Caregiving youth (and young adult caregivers) need support from their family and their community. Their unique needs impact their school performance, personal development, social/peer interactions and mental health.

While young adult caregivers are eligible to receive many of the same services made available to general adult caregivers over the age of 18, caregiving youth are not. The following community resources have been identified to help meet the many needs of caregiving youth, some young adult caregivers, and their families.
